History

The breed traces its origins to domestic cats brought to Britain by the Romans, later refined through selective breeding in the 19th century into the modern British Shorthair.

Physical characteristics

British Shorthairs have a stocky, well-rounded body, dense plush coat, and a round face with round eyes, most famously seen in the solid blue-grey coloring often called "British Blue."
